The Sheer Irrelevance of it All

Carl Sagan's observation of the earth as an almost completely irrelevant speck of dust in the vast expanse of the cosmos becomes the unlikely rallying cry for humanity's survival. Given how we are so inconsequential as to almost not even exist, Sagan argues, what is the point of a world with suffering, pain, and the ill treatment of others and the planet in acts of self-importance when we live on a planet that in itself is completely unimportant?
